Thank you for this wishlist book, Marsala. Even if I was confused between J.G. Farrell and J.G. Ballard, I've been looking forward to getting my hands on this book as the first in a trilogy. And on the journey home on the train, iiwi spotted it and asked if he could have it next, so I'll try not to keep it for too many years before reading.

This was fantastic! It reminded me of Evelyn Waugh, P.G. Wodehouse and Cold Comfort Farm, all rolled into one, with a smattering of Irish independence history and the world events of 1919-1921 thrown in (including race riots in Chicago!). 1919 was quite the year: massacre at Amritsar, Bolsheviks in Russia and in Ireland, Sinn Fein wants to get rid of those colonist British. Meanwhile the Majestic hotel is falling down around the permanent residents' ears (rather like Fawlty Towers), inhabited by little old ladies and ever-increasing numbers of cats and rats. I absolutely loved this book! I think it may be added to my Personal Collection (though iiwi is welcome to borrow it as I see I made a note he was interested). I already had The Singapore Grip to read, but I’ve now bought The Siege of Krishnapur to complete the trilogy, all in the same edition; that makes me ridiculously happy.
