When reading Paulo Coelho, one finds oneself in a strange no man's land between fact and fiction. Manuscript Found in Accra is no exception.

Manuscript Found in Accra starts with the Nag Hammadi find, a collection of scrolls relating to early Christianity, containing among others The Gospel of Thomas and The Gospel of Mary. The early Christian church decided what was acceptable text and what was not. Anything unacceptable was deemed heretical and destroyed, those possessing such texts were heretics and put to death. So called heretical texts were hidden away. Hence the importance of the Nag Hammadi find.

Manuscript Found in Accra is set in a square in Jerusalem on the eve of the Crusades.

On the eve of the Crusades, Christians and Jews and Muslims lived in harmony.

In the square a philosophical discussion takes place between the people and a Greek.

Why a Greek?

Paulo Coelho answered this question at a press conference in Athens. The Greek belongs to no religion, and represents the philosophy of Ancient Greece.

The style is reminiscent of The Prophet or The Gospel of Thomas.
