I've not read anything by Anita Brookner before, but had heard good things about her writing. But this book was tedious. The subject was depressing, the characters unlikable and the writing too long-winded and scattered with words and phrases unknown to me!

So.... 8 long years after reading this, I'm finally moving it along!
