From the publisher: "... Born in China to parents whose musical careers were interrupted by the Cultural Revolution, Lang Lang has emerged as one of the greatest pianists of our time. Yet despite his fame, few in the West know of the heart-wrenching journey from his early childhood as a prodigy in an industrial city in northern China to his difficult years in Beijing to his success today.
Journey of a Thousand Miles documents the remarkable, dramatic story of a family who sacrificed almost everything—his parents’ marriage, financial security, Lang Lang’s childhood, and their reputation in China’s insular classical music world—for the belief in a young boy’s talent. And it reveals the devastating and intense relationship between a boy and his father, who was willing to go to any length to make his son a star.
An engaging, informative cultural commentator who bridges East and West, Lang Lang has written more than an autobiography: his book opens a door to China, where Lang Lang is a cultural icon, at a time when the world’s attention will be on Beijing. Written with David Ritz, the coauthor of many bestselling autobiographies, Journey of a Thousand Miles is an inspiring story that will give readers an appreciation for the courage and sacrifice it takes to achieve greatness."

☺ Happy Traveling, Book! ☺
safely arrived in Salt Lake last week~~ I apologize for taking so long to journal.. Looking forward to the read :) Thanks for offering, and sending it so quickly!
Lo siento~ sorry I have become so terrible at journalling after reading (head hanging). I very much enjoyed this one! It's now heading off to work musical magic on another reader~~thanks for sharing, HI&& and Dove-i-libre :)
Arrived in Pa and added to Mt Tbr (the ABC version). Thanks!
Kind of young for a biography - he was born the same year as my son (1982). But, he's had an eventful life so far - being born in China and the family sacrificing so much in the dreams of the son becoming a star. And then the time arrived and he was able to make classical piano his profession. I was glad to see a tiny glimmer in the ending chapter that Lang sees that there's a world beyond the piano...and the constant travel, excitement and glamour.

Happy reading!
Arrived safely, thank you NancyNova!
I haven't the faintest what a good classical piano piece sounds like (Tori Amos anyone?), but I'm listening to his discography as I type, and about to plan a trip to Philadelphia to watch him open the season, all based on this book alone.
He had a tiger dad to the max...who was also his greatest champion. There is a recording of them both performing an encore piece at Carnegie Hall together that's very stirring, especially given that Lang Lang is sharing the stage, and his dream, with a fellow musician who had to give up his.
I liked reading about such a singular immigrant experience, and his approaching every new thing (i.e. rap music) without judgement, even though he'd been judged his whole life.
It wasn't mentioned, but I do hope he and his mother have been able to make up for a LOT of lost time.

Happy reading!
Received this from @echode as it was on my wishlist. THANK YOU!
I have long enjoyed Lang Lang's piano performances. Now that I've read his biography and the immense pain he has experienced, I think I better understand his emotional playing style. I agree with @echode that I hope he makes up for all the time he lost with his mother!!
