I've been very impressed with other books I've read by this author so was pleased to find one I'd not read in the Weston Hospicecare charity shop, opposite the Odeon, in Weston-super-Mare during a lovely Summer holiday in North Somerset.

Amazon Editorial Review: "Sisters Gillian and Sally Owens were brought up by their two elderly guardian aunts in a world of spells and exotica. As the magical charm of their childhood wears away, they escape from this mystical mayhem - one by running away, the other by marrying. Many years go by before strange circumstances thrust them together again, and once more they are in a place that blends the mundane and mysterious, the familiar and fantastic. Three generations of Owens women are brought together in an experience of unexpected insight and revelation, teaching all of them that such perceptions are rare and wonderful and - to be sure - practical."

I knew this wasn't in very good condition, with some unpleasant yellow staining, but I hadn't realised it was decorated with quite so many strange notes, written in a rather childish script as though it had been used as a school textbook - which seems unlikely somehow!
As I read, I'm remembering the film of the same name so that Sally looks like Sandra Bullock in my head - but, funnily enough, Gillian doesn't look like Nicole Kidman ....

I thoroughly enjoyed that, could hardly put it down, finished it within 24 hours of starting it! It's all about Love really - and the true magic is Ms Hoffman's wonderful way with words, truly magical!
Now reserved to fulfil a Wish List wish!

Thank you so much for the RABCK - the film is one of my faves and I can't wait to read this.

I had a sense of disappointment all the way through reading this book. The film with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, is a firm favourite, and I was really looking forward to more character development from the book ... but I actually think the story holds together a lot better in the film.

There is a vagueness about the book that I found annoying ... I'm not sure whether it was the writing style or that the point of view changed a lot, sometimes from paragraph to paragraph, and back again. Whatever the reason, it meant that I didn't engage with the characters the way that I wanted to. My other little niggle is the lack of actual 'magic' ... it isn't even really mentioned in passing, but kind of referred to as innuendo, hints and mysterious little asides. In fact, the only world that really comes to mind again is vague!

However, on the plus side, I did enjoy reading this, just not as much as I hoped. Although the storyline was a bit all over the place, I liked the fact that all our Owen's women found some sort of love at the end of the book.

So overall, an ok read that I probably would have enjoyed more if the film wasn't such a favourite.
