Maybe this is a silly statement to make but I was surprised by how "Australian" this novel is. From the beginning I got a real sense of Finn's hectic, stressful job as a journalist and from nearly the first page there are a lot of slang words and Australian vernacular. Shiver must have arrived on the publishing scene in the late 1990s like a breath of fresh air.
I found this novel really interesting. It was a joy to read about a place that I would love to see but will never visit because of the terrible cold. Gemmell's details about all the necessary procedures, the clothing, what life on the ship was like and in particular the men, forms a big part of the novel. At first I had a few problems telling the men apart but the tension was there as Finn gradually worked out how she felt about certain men on board.
I love her descriptions throughout Shiver:
"When the mist lifts the sky is white and the ocean disappears as we sail deeper south. On the first day, the water's like heaving marble. It's grey-black, with long veins of white through it. The next day there are giant ice cubes bobbing in a bathtub sea. Then it's ice pancakes. As far as I can see."
A very original novel. Highly recommended.
