Short contents:
Fourteen-year-old Alma Singer is trying to find a cure for her mother's loneliness. Believing she might discover it in an old book her mother is lovingly translating, she sets out in search of its author. Across New York an old man called Leo Gursky is trying to survive a little bit longer. He spends his days dreaming of the lost love who, sixty years ago in Poland, inspired him to write a book. And although he doesn't know it yet, that book also survived: crossing oceans and generations, and changing lives...

Having difficulty to pinpoint what I think of this book. On the one hand I liked it, was it interesting. The story described, the pieces of history, the characters.

On the other hand reading it made me very confused. The different lay outs, the many characters, the different voices. It was hard for me to try and distinguish them, to keep track of them during the book.

I think, I'll try to find a copy in Dutch, to give it another try. For the book is good and unusual enough to dig a bit further.

I struggled to finish this book. I found parts confusing and unsure of who was talking. On the other hand, the deep sadness and loneliness drew the reader to finish the book. How sad to be so alone in the world that you would wear a note that said, "My name is Leo Gursky I have no family Please call Pinelawn Cemetery I have a plot there in the Jewish part Thank you for your consideration. One of the horrible effects of Nazi Germany's final solution.
