This book caused such a scandal upon its publication in 1899 that Chopin, who had been a society woman, stopped writing and was ostracized.

The story is of a woman who is in a pleasant enough marriage and still feels the constraints of proper society. She has the vague desire to break free, dabbles in painting and struggles with an extramarital love. The resolution is provocative and controversial. This is a book about passion and often evokes passionate responses.
