Different cover to that shown.

My name is Peter Grant, and I'm a Detective Constable in that mighty army for justice known as the Metropolitan Police (a.k.a. The Filth). I'm also the first trainee wizard in the Met for fifty years.

Something violently supernatural had happened, something strong enough to leave an imprint on the corpse of part time jazz saxophonist Cyrus Wilkinson as if he were a wax cylinder recording . He's not the first music fan to drop dead of a heart attack right after a gig, but no-one was going to let me start examining corpses to check for supernatural similarities. Instead it was back to old-fashioned police legwork. It didn't take me long to realize there were monsters stalking Soho, creatures feeding off the gift that separates the great musicians from those who can raise a decent tune. What they take is beauty. What they leave behind is broken lives. And as I hunted them, my investigation got tangled up in another story; a brilliant trumpet player, Richard "Lord" Grant, my father - who managed to destroy his own career, twice.

Policing: most of the time you're doing it to maintain public order. Occasionally you're doing it for justice. And maybe, once in a career, you're doing it for revenge.

I loved reading this fanatstic sequel to Rivers of London! I found it exciting to read because it's not like anything else I've read, it's set in my city (London), it's funny and unpredictable. All that combined makes for a very entertaining read. Can't wait to read the next one in the series (Whispers Under Ground) - it's on order!

Got the next reader already lined up. Hope to get this in the post tomorrow.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Packed and ready for this next reader, will post on my break tomorrow.

Random note - the envelope is well travelled too! Came to me from Germany, already well used!

The envelope was very well travelled, lots of tape! Thanks!

Finished this book last week. Found the story engrossing, lots of character detail and a clever plot. Started off slighly disappointed that Nightingale is a lesser character but this didn't affect my enjoyment of the book at all. I like how the story continued from Rivers of London but at one point thought there were too many new characters being introduced, but it all worked out and connected up well.

Really impressed with this writing and the sensitivity to the characters - there are no really evil characters/cariacatures, they all have their own stories and the interactions are believable. Great action sequences too. I also liked the ending, and how everything wasn't totally resolved - looking forward to starting the next in the series.

One thing I didn't understand was why Beverley Brook would be at risk if something happens to Ash? I know the river people can claim people (careful of the tea and cake!) but didn't really get this minor point.

Overall, fantastic book.
