First of all, the good part: this is a completely fascinating look at the details of life as a Geisha. I loved that part, and could have gone on listening to it quite happily for as long as the author cared to write.
Minor complaint #1: because this is a novel, albeit a very well researched one, Golden must have felt compelled to finish up with a suspenseful conclusion. So he puts Sayuri in a position where she must make a terrible choice, and gamble with her whole future. I don't know how realistic this was, and I'm personally very conflicted as to whether she made the right choice.
Minor complaint #2: usually when I listen to an audio version of a work I've previously read, the audio experience is far richer and more enjoyable. This was not true here. The performance by Bernadette Dunne was perfectly correct - no mispronunciations at all - but quite flat. I'd recommend this audiobook for anyone who hasn't yet read the original, because you will enjoy the story. But if you've already read the original, this won't add anything.
This is gloriously unabridged, and contained on 15 CD's.

Thank you JudySlump612, the book arrived today. It sat next to our doorstep together with another package I was waiting for :)
I chose this audio book, because several years ago I gave a printed version of this to my husband. He's never gotten around to reading that, but we do enjoy listening to audio books together on longer car trips. And this is a book he's shown some interest in.

Hubby and I recently finished reading this in the car on a trip to Yellowstone.
We enjoyed getting insights into the life of a geisha by listening to this novel.

Taking this from the bookbox.
A very interesting story that doesn't have a dull moment. The details about life as a geisha and in general life in Japan around WWII are very interesting.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Guess I didn't journal after I listened to it quite a while ago. I totally loved the story, the details of the geisha's world is fascinating - not sure how authentic it is - and the storytelling is captivating, it kept me hooked wondering what will happen next.
Now going into the bookbox. It's an old novel so probably most people have read it already. Feel free to wild release if there's no BCer interested.
