Maybe this is a silly statement to make but I was surprised by how "Australian" this novel is. From the beginning I got a real sense of Finn's hectic, stressful job as a journalist and from nearly the first page there are a lot of slang words and Australian vernacular. Shiver must have arrived on the publishing scene in the late 1990s like a breath of fresh air.
I found this novel really interesting. It was a joy to read about a place that I would love to see but will never visit because of the terrible cold. Gemmell's details about all the necessary procedures, the clothing, what life on the ship was like and in particular the men, forms a big part of the novel. At first I had a few problems telling the men apart but the tension was there as Finn gradually worked out how she felt about certain men on board.
I love her descriptions throughout Shiver:
"When the mist lifts the sky is white and the ocean disappears as we sail deeper south. On the first day, the water's like heaving marble. It's grey-black, with long veins of white through it. The next day there are giant ice cubes bobbing in a bathtub sea. Then it's ice pancakes. As far as I can see."
A very original novel. Highly recommended.

From the back cover:
In her first novel Nikki Gemmell delves into the emotional depth of love and loss set in the wilderness of Antarctica. Faced with the opportunity of a lifetime, Fin learns the rules and taboos of community life in Antarctica. Amid the land of mythical tragedies, of long journeys into darkness and death, of soles falling from feet and being strapped back on, of teeth freezing and splitting, fingers dying, toenails coming away - Fin breaks the strictest taboo of all - she falls in love. Fin gets caught in a chain of events that lead to a shattering conclusion.

About the Author:
Born in Wollongong, Australia, she lived in London for many years but has now returned to Australia with her family.

Nikki Gemmell has written four novels, Shiver, Cleave, Lovesong and The Bride Stripped Bare, and one non-fiction book, Pleasure: An Almanac for the Heart. Her work has been internationally critically acclaimed and translated into many languages

I really enjoyed the first 3/4 of this book which I read on a plane journey. Then I got home and read the final quarter and just didn't enjoy it as much.
I'm not sure if this is me or the book.
I think I was nicely settling into the story, and then it all just wound up to the ending in about 20 pages.

Looking forward to reading more of her books before forming too much of a negative opinion of this author.

A very quick, but enjoyable read. Enjoyed the brevity of the writing style. Short sentences. To the point. Nice descriptions of Antarctica and the voyage as well. I have a friend who's working there at the moment, so this was an interesting insight into what he's experiencing. Don't reckon I could hack the cold. I'm scared enough of the idea of England at Christmas. Brrrrrrrrrrrr!

Setting this one aside for the Women in Fiction Virtual Book Box
