Journal Entry 1 by karendawn from Lafayette, Indiana USA on Sunday, December 14, 2003
This came from my husband's stack of books. He didn't finish reading it because he couldn't get into it.

From the back cover:
Every has been afraid, sometime.

Everyone has felt fear close a cold hand around the heart, tug at the scalp and send the blood racing wildly.

Everyone has been afraid.

But none so afraid as the terror-stricken men and women of Milburn.

Called by a supernatural force to answer for a supernatural sin.

Sentenced in teh evil heart of a darkness to live out a ghost story.

Well.....I'm afraid i'm gunna have to agree with karendawn's husband. I got to page 118 and i'm thinking "Why am i doing this to myself?". The prolog of the book (where a child is kidnapped) made me want to read on, but then the story changes and centres on a group of elderly gentlemen who meet up periodically to tell each other stories. The only story i read reminded me of the "Mothman" story. Sorry, i got completely fed up..... Only giving it a 5, i'm sure its not the book, its the reader!

I enjoyed this book - it was very well written and atmospheric. But I must take issue with some of the reviews at the front, which describe it as the scariest book ever.
It's gripping and quite disturbing at times, but it's far from being the scariest book I've ever read.
I liked the relationships between all the protagonists, especially the four old men.
I saw the film based on this book a few years ago, and now I've read the book, I can't believe the amount of plot the film left out - it quite missed the point of the story.
This is a good one for curling up with on a cold winter's night.

Journal Entry 15 by 4orty7even from Kingston upon Thames, Surrey United Kingdom on Thursday, December 31, 2009
It's taken me almost 3 years to get round to reading this and I loved it !

I was hooked from the first page, and while the story is quite rambling with plenty of what appears to be unconnected characters and incidents, they all come together eventualy.

Worth sticking with, if you find it hard going.

After 6 years of travels the book is in poor condition but readable if treated with care.
