In Cabin Six the half-dozen men and women - and one extra - who are passengers on the first American space shuttle for civilians are entering the space age as we all are, in the waning century, with our personal histories at our backs. Tom Gilpin, brilliantly odd social reformer and cult hero of the young; Veronica, the sexual explorer; Mulenberg, the businessman who knows he speaks deepest to women; William Wert, the diplomat who will be head man on arrival; Soraya, survivor of Iran's revolution; Lievering, who may or may not be a survivor of the death camps - by the time they converge there, you will know all their secret histories. Plus the one extra story, of that most affecting young stowaway - Mole.

Because their lives have ranged the world in extraordinary panorama, the novel does. Then and only then, daily life on a space vehicle - a most realistic one - is explored in terms of these seven. How does life in space change the body, the emotions and appetites, the measurement of a thigh or a heart? What is in store for the ship's passenger list of one hundred, and for their century? Will what happens to them in the gripping last pages happen to us?

In this spectacular narrative, which never loses sight of small human concerns, Calisher's celebrated storytelling, which has been compared to both Dickens and Proust, is at its most moving, and her intuitive powers at their height. "A space suit is a small vehicle in the shape of a human being." So is this magnificent book. Mysteries of Motion is Hortense Calisher's fifteenth book. False Entry, her first novel, The Collected Stories of Hortense Calisher and the notable memoir Herself were all National Book Award nominees. She is a member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

OBCZ Columbuksen hylly on jäänyt kauppakeskuksessa työmaa-aitojen sisäpuolelle, joten vien aamulla kirjoja Kampin kierrätyshyllyyn. Käy nappaamassa sieltä luettavaa!

Enjoy reading!
