When my friend was clearing out an old storeroom at her workplace, she found a huge number of books tucked away out of sight. Rather than see them thrown out, I kindly offered to adopt them all for BookCrossing.

Hmm. So, it's easy to see what this book was trying to achieve - a celebration of women who have made it in what were largely the male dominated worlds of racing, eventing, jumping and other equestrian sports. However, despite being written by a woman, it still seemed to contain most of the sexist cliches that make us wince now - the author has a preoccupation with describing the looks and dress of her subjects, and in two chapters, refers to them as Mrs (husband's name)! I had to keep reminding myself that it was written in the 1970's.

That said, it was an interesting insight into the sport and the people of the time. Definitely worth the read.
