Originally written in 1987, this book, unfortunately, remains pertinent. Dr. Lewis Goldfrank has been the head of the Bellevue Hospital Emergency Department since the late 1970s. This book is a case by case proof of how health care is damaged and compromised by the profit motive. Bellvue remains one of the few 'means-blind' hospitals, treating all ill people because of Goldfrank.

The writing of the book in 1987 is significant because the HMOs and profit driven medicine were gathering steam. Goldfrank treats the dispossed, the underserved and points out how much harder it gets everyday when the medical staff are second to the financiers. Sad that this book was not taken as a warning bell, but the fight continues as Goldfrank notes in his 2004 afterword. And, yes, in 2013, he is still there.

Fly far little book!
