Four & Twenty Blackbirds
2 journalers for this copy...
From a remainder bin in a little stationer's in the Ilam shops. We stopped there to get some fish and chips for tea (no, not at the bookshop, at the fish and chip shop next door!) and I spotted a bin outside the shop with a sign saying "Books $2", so quickly pounced and managed to select a large bundle before the shopkeeper could shut the shop.

Combining the mystery and fantasy genres doesn't always work (with the notable exception of Pratchett's City Guard books), but this one is quite nicely done. It's a pity the mystery is solved for the reader long before it is for the detective, but the story really wouldn't have worked without it, so I can forgive that. And I did like the way the romantic sub-plot worked out.
