Intense and atmospheric. I enjoyed this rather bleak, contemplative novel - but needed a Spanish/English dictionary to help me with some of the dialogue! The book is mostly set in Mexico in the 1940s, and while the prose is McCarthy's spacious & rich American English, many of the protagonist's encounters and conversations are with Spanish speakers. It helped knowing a little of the language.
There are many stories within the novel, as Billy listens to the tales people tell him along the way. And Billy's own story, full of tragedy, provides much food for thought.
