WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Factory Girls by Leslie T. Chang
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Very good memoir and journalistic account of life amongst young women working and living primarily in Dongguan. The interviews and narratives gleaned from Chang's experience display an earnestness of life experience, and the reader also sees the revelation of an inner world of current ascendant Chinese capitalism.
The writer also tells her family story, the way in which members of her family were affected severely by the post-WWII Communist takeover and the Cultural Revolution that took place. She attempts to find a relationship between her story and the young women's stories, and is fairly successful at doing so.
