Journal Entry 1 by Boekentrol from Leeuwarden, Fryslân (Friesland) Netherlands on Wednesday, May 22, 2013
Synopsis:
"The tranquility in a Bulgarian village under Ottoman rule is only superficial: the people are quietly preparing for an uprising. The plot follows the story of Boycho Ognyanov, who, having escaped from a prison in Diarbekir, returns to the Bulgarian town of Byala Cherkva (White Church, today Sopot) to take part in the rebellion. There he meets old friends, enemies, and the love of his life. The plot portrays the personal drama of the characters, their emotions, motives for taking part in or standing against the rebellion, betrayal and conflict.
Historically, the uprising fails due to bad organization, limited resources, and betrayal. The way in which the Ottomans break the uprising down then becomes the pretext for the Russian-Turkish war, that brought about Bulgarian independence."

Journal Entry 3 by Boekentrol at Leeuwarden, Fryslân (Friesland) Netherlands on Sunday, October 12, 2014
At this moment in time, this book I found this book not as ibteresting as I had hoped.
Several reasons for that (I guess): lack of concentration due to personal issues, lack of knowlegde about the history of that part of the world (note to self: fresh up, read on the matter), and the typesetting.

It took me ages to get through and I was repeatedly confused by the many names, under cover names, towns & villages that I could not pin down.
An interesting reading experience, but not one I'd repeat quickly...

Journal Entry 5 by Oedde at Darmstadt, Hessen Germany on Friday, January 1, 2016
Going through some bookcrossing stuff, I found this book and saw that I hadn't journaled it before - wow, I'm so sorry, Boekentrol! You were so kind to trade it with me, and I feel really bad about keeping you in the dark about where it is for so long. I can only say that I probably forgot to journal it because of some stuff going on at the time when I received it.
I will definitely let you know when I'll get around to reading it. I requested it from you because when I visited Bulgaria a few years ago, people I asked about Bulgarian literature kept mentioning this novel as THE Bulgarian classic, and I got curious.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Well, unfortunately, I'm not so curious about Ivan Vazov anymore, and I'm downsizing my library by a lot - and this book is a victim of that purge...
I'm releasing it in a place where lots of language students (and teachers) go every day, hoping that it will get picked up by someone who not only reads it but also lets us know about its journey in a journal entry.
