This is a very clever little book. Before I tell you about it, I'll just mention that I've always been a student of psychogeography - a sense of place, the cultural environment, the shifting patterns of human thought and the way they're reflected in our countries, topographies, cartographies and mythologies. That's my definition of it for the evening, anyway, and I'm sticking to it. And any other students of a similar thing would be well advised to seek out Mr Iyer's book and see how he perceives the Far East - and how the Far East perceives the West, through him and for him. He leaves the US as an English-born Indian resident in America, with the cultural baggage that entails: and expects to find the world enslaved by and in revolt against Western domination. But what he actually finds is much more ambiguous...
This is my kind of travel writing. Though I still confess to enjoying PJ O'Rourke...

Release planned for Tuesday, December 09, 2003 at By the condiments, Big Blue Coffee Co in Derby, England United Kingdom.

This book is already well thumbed and well-travelled: my Gran picked it up in a Buxton charity shop. Now it's being released in a coffee house in Derby, and who knows where it will go from there... After 5.
