The Tenderness of Wolves: A Novel

"Nothing links person to person like the frequent passage from hand to hand of a good book."
Winner of the Costa Book of the Year, Best First Novel of the Year Awards and the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award. "The Tenderness of Wolves" was also long-listed for the Orange Prize in fiction.
The story takes place in 1867 in the Canadian Northern Territory (read "really really cold"). In the tiny and very isolated settlement of Dove River a man is murdered. The story includes the discovery of the body, the disappearance of a local young man, and an extensive search for both the young man and the murderer.
We meet many local folks along the way who get involved for one reason or another -- the local magistrate and his family, the general store owner, the parents of the missing boy, and also a number of other people who come to town to investigate or who are met along the way of the investigation.
It is hard to tell at any point who is the killer, who is really investigating for the general good or for their own purpose? There is racial tension between local natives and the white settlers, between women and men, between "Company" men and local settlers, and there is a great deal of personal drama as well. I found the story of the various mysteries intriguing all the way through, and it's a very interesting period piece as well.
