Journal Entry 1 by me-chase-me from Bad Oeynhausen, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Monday, March 25, 2013
Nellie Bly took an undercover journalist assignment to pretend to be insane to investigate reports of brutality and neglect at mental asylums. After a night of practicing deranged expressions in front of a mirror, she checked into a working-class boarding-house where she feigned insanity so well that everyone was convinced. She was then examined by several doctors, who all declared her to be insane, too.

Committed to an asylum, Bly experienced its dire conditions firsthand: horrible spoiled food; the patients mistreated and abused; unclean and unsanitary conditions. Furthermore, speaking with her fellow patients, Bly was convinced that some were as sane as she was. After ten days, Bly was released from the asylum with her editor's help and she published her experience in book form as "Ten Days in a Mad-House." It caused a sensation and brought her lasting fame. More importantly, thanks to this book, living conditions for the insane were improved and funds for their care were increased.

Arrived safely in Wuppertal today, thank you very much!
I have only recently heard of this book and thought how courageous this woman must have been - I would have been too afraid that the doctors, seized by fear that their medical reputation might be at risk, would not let me out... I am looking forward to reading her report!

11 June 2013: It is often horrible and frightening to see how violently many people act when they have power over others (and this has not changed much since the first publication of this book in 1887 only that there are fewer occasions for bullies as the modern societies in Europe are less submissive to authority). You would think that the doctors, the so-called specialists, should at least have noticed that certain nurses show psychopathic behaviour and that the state of the patients rapidly deteriorates due to the ill treatment... It makes me also very sad to think of the numerous women who were put into mental asylums and finished their lives there only because they were an obstacle for their husbands or simply because they show their feelings more openly than others.
This book really shows the value of investigative journalism and I am very glad to have read it :-)!

Thank you, colombina (as well as coming to Düsseldorf today)! I'm really curious to read this small book...

What a courageous woman!
Unfortunately - and that's nothing new - people tend to mistreat the ones that a poorer, have less power, are less intelligent, are handicapped, ... That was in the past, is in the present and most probably will be in the future.
I am glad that the author could change at least a little the circumstances at her time and I hope that there always will be people like her fighting for human rights!

Liebe/r Finderin/Finder,
