From the front: "In today's Ukraine, all that stands between one man and murder by the mafia is a penguin."

Victor, who writes obituaries for a newspaper, lives with his pet penguin, Misha. When the people Victor writes about start dying it appears that his job is not all it seems. The loneliness and depression of Misha echo Victor's own isolation in modern day Ukraine, with the abandoned child Sophie making up the third of the mismatched trio. The bleak humour of this book makes it an excellent read.
