Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Love in the Time of Cholera is a beautifully crafted, beautifully written story of love and the love-sick. Spurned as a young man, Florentino Ariza had a half century of waiting to fill before a chance to re-declare his love for Fermina Daze comes, when her husband is killed retrieving a parrot from a mango tree. Funny, poignant and heartfelt - enduring and unrequited love have rarely been more movingly expressed.

This book didn't even have time to hit the table. I cannot express how excited I was to FINALLY come across a copy of this novel. It has been on my wishlist for years. It may have to bump a few other 'to-be'read' books down the line a bit!

Clearly this didn't bump any TBR books down the pile. It took me more than 4 years to get to it. It has actually been sitting in my bedside cupboard all that time with about 10 others. They are supposed to be the ones I get to next. I know I kept putting this off expecting it to be heavier and difficult to wade through. It wasn't stodgy and boring, but at times I did find my attention wandering. Like a lot of the old classics there was a lot of description. It is very skilfully written and rather sweet. I'm glad I can finally cross it off my list.

I loved this story about Florentino who is obsessed with his first love Fermina. Despite her marrying somebody else, and he taking on many lovers, she is always first in his heart as he patiently waits for her husband to die.
In the end, love wins when his patience and obsession are finally rewarded.

So excited to find my first book at Edwardes Lake. Perfect for me I am a total bookworm and havent read this one.

When it came to rating this book I was in a quandary...I couldnt decide whether to rate in a 1 or a 10!🤣
First the positives: At times the writing is delicious. Descriptive and so evocative that i felt i was in the setting seeing and feeling the world as one of the characters. I loved that you see several characters intimately from a few perspectives...their own ruminations, and how others perceive them. The book includes some interesting passages about ageing and takes the reader to a different time and place with all its complexities.
However this book comes with warnings too! While the prose is beautiful at times it is heavy going. For me it was not about love and romance but obsession. The plot is confronting on many levels with regard to class, gender and includes a disturbing instance of child sexual abuse.
This is not a romantic easy read but a challenging and complex book ...in my opinion quite ceepy really. I havent seen the movie but am curious to know how it portrays the main characters.

This was my first experience with book crossing so thank you to the member who left it at Edwardes Lakes park! I walk there often and have had my eyes open in case i am lucky enough to catch another !
I read the book while I was away in Argentina and left it to hopefully be found and read, in our accomodation in Palermo, a suburb of Buenos Aires.
