The story is of two brothers, Arthur and Jake, of the family expectations, and rivalry between the two. The chapters move back and forth across decades in Arthur's life as the story is told from Arthur's perspective and from young Ian's, the town doctor's son.

The story is set in the fictional small town of Struan, a small community northwest of New Liskeard, Ontario. Set in Northern Ontario with the lakes and forests of the Canadian Shield, the setting is beautiful but unforgiving with the harsh winters and isolation from larger communities.

Mary Lawson was born and raised on a farm in Southern Ontario.

Selected for the 2015 Canada Day Release Challenge, June 24 - July 5, with poetry as the theme.
