Searching for Anne Frank: Letters From Amsterdam to Iowa

Amazon Editorial Review
Few people know that Anne Frank and her sister Margot had pen pals in the United States. The American girls were Juanita Wagner (who wrote to Anne) and her older sister, Betty. They lived with their mother in Danville, Iowa. Although they corresponded only once before the German invasion of Holland closed the borders, the letters give a picture of Anne, her sister and their life. Much like her diary, this first-hand account vividly recreates the times in which she lived.

I loved this book and had a hard time putting it down when real lfe would interrupt my reading of it.
I learned a lot of things I never knew.
Miep Gies was originally from Vienna, Austria and she wasn't arrested during the raid on the secret annex because Karl Josef Silberbauer (the arresting officer) thought she was "a very nice girl" from his hometown.
Otto Frank met the son of the founder of Macy's department store while both were students at the Heidelberg University and he spent some time in NYC working at Macy's before he married and had children.
Also, I was so impressed by how well made this book is: Hardcover, dust jacket, high quality paper, in brand new condition. Hard to believe I paid so little for it.
Thank you Better World Books.

Thank you so much for tagging me with this! I've wanted to read it for some time now. And it *is* a beautifully constructed book.
The stamps on the package were an extra treat :-)

Goodness, I read this some time ago and never made a JE - my apologies!
I never knew that Anne & Margot had American penpals before hearing about this book. It's unfortunate that only a couple letters were exchanged before the Franks went into hiding, causing Juanita and Betty to wonder why the Franks stopped writing. They knew little about what was happening in Europe, and in any case, they didn't know that Anne & Margot were Jewish.
Descriptions of the rural life and activities of Juanita & Betty during the war years gave an interesting perspective. How different the two worlds were, in more ways than one!
As you said, hostile17, this book is of an excellent quality physically as well. I loved all the photos, not only of people, but of related documents as well.
Highly recommended. Thank you, hostile17!

Received today with a bookmark. I recently listened to Anne Frank Remembered by Miep Gies and welcome the chance to enter that world again. Thanks, eponine38!
I very much enjoyed this new perspective on the Anne Frank story. We are going to visit Amsterdam next summer and seeing the annex is top of my list.
The book is off to the U.K. to the winner of my monthly RABCK drawing. Enjoy!

I have been fascinated with Anne Frank's story since I learned about her at school, so I'm looking forward to reading this book. Thank you very much for sending it to me! I'd love to go to Amsterdam to visit the house she stayed in - I hope you have a wonderful time.
