I didn't remember that I'd read these before but actually many of the stories are totally familiar and I think I must have been read them as a child. I wonder if we had a book with only a selection of the stories as I don't recall some of them. They're so beautifully told and a delight to read. There is of course a darker side - I didn't realise as a child some of the politics that's behind the stories which is of its time but less acceptable today, and the desire for man to dominate the animals is uncomfortable. Nevertheless I love these.
