I got this fair-condition ex-library hardcover from Better World Books during a recent sale. It's set in Cape Cod, and features teenage girls meeting some very handsome yet rather odd boys...

The story alternates between news items about a missing nuclear missile in the sea off of Nova Scotia, and the lives of 17-year-olds Emily and Reese as they spend a vacation together on Cape Cod. When the two strange youths turn up - not long after a mysterious Something was discovered on the beach and shuttled off under great secrecy - the girls are drawn to them, as is anyone who comes near them. (They seem to impart a wonderful feeling of wellness whenever they're touched, but they explain that this is not something that's good for either side, as it drains them of energy.) Just who they are, where they come from, and why they're here are questions that are answered relatively early in the story, but are nicely surprising for all that. [Well, not TOTALLY surprising, but there is a bit of an unusual twist.]

The story's relatively gentle and relatively low-angst, despite a few rather tense segments involving an addled kid falling off of a roof, and, later, some attempts to evade a troupe of Men-In-Black-type agents. And despite the rather deep back-story and the 17-year-old protagonists, it seemed to me as if it were written for a younger audience - though I don't hold that against it.

All in all, I enjoyed it, though (or perhaps because) it wasn't at all what I expected {wry grin}.
