I read this book via an audiobook download from (narrated by the marvelous Simon Vance), and hunted up this fair-condition ARC softcover so I'd have a release copy. It's the second in Harris' series about an anatomist and surgeon in 1780s London. (The first is The Anatomist's Apprentice.)

This book includes a number of historical figures, including the surgeon John Hunter. But the central figure here is the Irish Giant - well, OK, one of several people known by that title, but Charles Byrne was the best known, and it is he about whom the story revolves. You see, Dr. Hunter is mad for anatomical specimens, is not above dealing with body-snatchers to retrieve interesting tidbits - and really, really wants to be able to add the Giant's skeleton to his collection. Oh, he's willing to wait for the man to die, of course - but then, as a skilled doctor, he can tell that Charles isn't well, and he may not have to wait long.

But Byrne has an even greater than usual fear of having his remains put on display after his death, and is terrified of the doctor, even though he's been offered considerable money if he'll agree to bequeath his own body to science. Through some coincidences, he winds up in the care of Lydia, the lovely widow who's begun a romance with Thomas - though they both want to keep it quiet for the time being. This leads Thomas to meet Byrne and become interested in his case - but he has divided loyalties, as Dr. Hunter is someone he respects.

There are other plots going on (of course) - mysterious hints about something from Lydia's past, a disgruntled barber on a mission (yes, the "demon barber" does turn up here, though in a rather surprising way), a singer whose career seems on the upswing is found murdered and his mentor (and, it turns out, lover) is jailed for the crime - yet another job for Dr. Silkstone... And all of this swirls around the rather shy, ailing giant, who's ill at ease with his celebrity and in constant fear of Dr. Hunter and the other too-eager anatomists.

There are lots of ups and downs in this story, with the evidence seeming to point to one perpetrator while someone else turns out to be involved. I could have done without the Lydia's-past subplot, but it served to reveal more of the underbelly of society at the time. The glossary provides a LOT of detail about terms and historical tie-ins, with some really intriguing side stories - lots of bonus reading...

A fascinating read; certainly the story of Charles Byrne is touching, but Dr. Hunter is also a very interesting character. His methods (and scruples or lack thereof) leave much to be desired but his remarkable collections are still of value today.

I"ll keep an eye out for Dr. Silkstone"s further adventures.

Here's another copy on my shelf.
