The book is a romance, but is as much about survival as it is about love, and as much about place as it is about survival. It is written in what seems like a period style of writing, with long slow sentences and thoughtful attention to the natural world. It takes an adjustment from fast plot-based books, but is worth the effort in terms of nuggets of wisdom and an understanding of human beings, as well as some insight into the time and place of the Civil War south.
