Picked up from Helsinki Airport book swap lounge, a very nice find on my way to Warsaw. I have seen the touching movie and I am interested in reading the book, too.

A paperback by Phoenix / Orion books, 2002, 224 pages. Original Polish title Śmierć miasta.

"'You can learn more about human nature from this brief account of the survival of one man throughout the war years in the devastated city of Warsaw than from several volumes of the average encyclopaedia' Independent on Sunday

'We are drawn in to share his surprise and then disbelief at the horrifying progress of events, all conveyed with an understated intimacy and dailiness that render them painfully close¿riveting' Observer

'The images drawn are unusually sharp and clear¿but its moral tone is even more striking: Szpilman refuses to make a hero or a demon out of anyone' Literary Review"

Very touching memoir and important book to read. The terrors of the holocaust should never be forgotten. This book is a tribute to survival and a serious non-fiction remembrance of the terrors endured by the Polish Jews. It also shows a glimpse of human kindness amidst the suffering.

The stories were even more vivid for me as I visited the former Warsaw ghetto areas, remaining parts of the ghetto walls, the location of the bridge over the Chlodna street and the Umschlagplatz when touring the city in October 2012. Many geocaches were placed at these locations to bring people to learn and remember the history. It was very poignant that I found this book on the airport shelf just when heading to Warsaw. Thank you belongs to whoever left this there.

Very good, impressive, touching book. I've also visited Warsaw, but didn't see all the places Bookgeo did - only the remaining parts of the ghetto walls. So next time I go there, I'll visit the rest.
