Dorain Gray was the most beautiful man that anyone had ever seen: a veritable Adonis. But he made a diabolical pledge to remain so and he was stuck that way forever. His portrait wouldn't remain as fresh-faced and handsome: it would slowly turn into a grotesque, visible concience that would terrify him for the rest of his life.

Haunting without being sinister, this is a good book made remarkable by Oscar Wilde's flair for language and incredible wit.
It seems to be loosely based upon Wilde's true-life relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas (Bosie), so this book caused a storm when it was published in 1891. Wilde was arrested and imprisoned- ruining his health and causing to an early death nine years later whilst in exile.

This otherwise excellent book runs out of stream in the middle- but have no fear, Wilde's usual standard is back for the fantastic final chapters. It can be a tad wordy and pretentious but what do you expect from the leader of the Aesthetic movement?

If you like this you'll love:
The Victoria and Albert Museum, London
Wilde: a feature film starring Jude Law (mmm)

But you will rightly despise the characterisation of Dorian Gray in the Hollywood blockbuster The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Boo!
