Wow. Haven't run accross this author before, but she will now go on my reading list.

Inspector Gamache of the Surete in Quebec Province has a problem. He is fresh off a diasaterous case where he lost many officers in a raid for which he blames himself. To recover his nerve and perhaps his ability to go on, he visits his old boss in Quebec, and is drawn into a mystery involving the whereabouts of the founder of Quebec. At the same time, he has asked his second in command, who was also severely wounded in the raid, to look into a case they have already settled, second guessing old decisions, in the wake of his latest diasaterous one.

A bit slow going at first, as you have three narrative threads to follow, but riveting by mid book. Amazing that all three threads make such a deep and meaningful whole by the end.

Missing its dust jacket.
