This is the fist in a proposed series of "cupcake mysteries" and there is at least a second book. These theme mysteries all have the problem of having to take place in connection with a particular shop or business, but you just say "whatever" and dive in. I don't know Scottsdale, but it doesn't matter since the setting, other than the immediately adjacent shops, isn't stressed. The characters are likeable and their long time connection with each other is warm and natural. You can tell that movie quotes are going to pop up throughout this series and this movie evening thing is one weakness. It just doesn't feel quite right, but it's fun. The enemy baker is going to carry on, too, and that will become as annoying as the Leboeuf character in the book repair series (different author, but you know what I mean). She is so abnormal. Surprisingly I did find Christie the Bridezilla quite believable. The insecure, completely controlling, short tempered business owner is a believable character and if someone had to die it was good it was her. The story moves along quickly, the writing is light and fairly frothy, but does Angie have to have seven brothers? I suppose we'll meet them all eventually, each with his own particular little quirk. I like Joe, though. Romance through this series is going to be a little difficult since the ultimate pairing is set out already and there are only so many things that can hinder the desired outcome before you have to either fish or cut bait. The only thing I refuse to believe is the whole bother about the original engagement. No way would anyone let that whole thing pass, no way! A typical fluffy read - oh and Mel says the secret to moist cupcakes is oil not butter, but the recipes all specify butter. Going to try the lemon raspberry one, though. (You can use soured milk for buttermilk. Two tablespoons vinegar to 1 cup milk.)
