Thanks, Lamilla, for the lovely Women´s Day package. I have read and enjoyed other books by Joanne Harris, so I´m sure I am going to like this one too. The postcards and bookmarks are great ( I love cats!) and it is always nice to receive a handwritten letter :-)
This book was a real page turner and I had a hard time putting it down! “Gentlemen & Players” is a true psychological thriller, where the reader is always kept guessing who the bad guy is and, especially, why is he causing havoc in a prestigious grammar school which he worshipped in the past.
When John Snyde accepted a job as porter at St. Oswald´s, he never expected that his 12 year old child would become so fascinated with the place… a place inaccessible for people with their social background. Young Snyde dreams of becoming part of St. Oswald´s and usually skips low Sunnybank School to walk through the corridors and grounds of the long-established institution. On one of the forbidden visits to the school, Snyde meets Leon, an upper class sardonic teenager, and an obsessive friendship begins. Thirteen years later, Snyde returns to St. Oswald´s as a teacher and slowly begins to sow the seeds of chaos that may destroy, forever, the reputation of the school…
This book is so addictive because you are constantly trying to guess which teacher is Snyde and why the once loved St. Oswald´s has to be destroyed. There are some very chilling moments of teenage cruelty and manipulation that make you cringe and finally accept that children may be vicious wolves perfectly disguised in sheep´s clothing. There is a twist at the end, but if you think out of the box you may get there. Without a doubt, a fantastic read!
