Wow. Set in the mid 1940s, in the south, we are intoduced to Grant Wiggins, a schoolteacher in a one room school on an old plantation. There is a robbery in town, and another black man is sentenced to death. Okay, you think you know where this story is going; you don't.

Wiggins gets sucked in by the network of old Aunties to see to the young condemned man. He confronts his feelings on being a Black man in the South, while seething with resentment upon the expectations placed upon him. At the same time the author lets us see the network of Aunties at work on Wiggins, they are also calling in all chips they have on the power structure in the small town. Brilliant. No easy answers, but a moving testiment to what it means to be a man.
