The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Definitely a fun YA read - concerns a woman detective, Thursday Next, who works in a special unit focusing on literary crimes. The villain is Acheron Hades, who has already altered the contents of Dickens' Martin Chuzzlewit, and is now threatening Jane Eyre unless he receives a certain ransom. The tome is perfect for those who are interested in literature and want to experience and amalgam of a sci-fi thriller with literary wit. Not all plot points and sci-fi devices are entirely plausible (there are bits of time travel here and there), and the romantic and familial references of the main character ring a bit superficial, but the reader ultimately ignores such oversight to relish the cleverness of the scenario. The technological and political spheres of the text definitely mirror some of those in real life.
