Otto is an ordinary German living in a shabby apartment block. He tries to stay out of trouble under Nazi rule. When he discovers his only son has been killed fighting at the front, he is shocked into an extraordinary act of resistance. He starts dropping anonymous post cards attacking Hitler across the city. If caught, he will be executed. Soon, this silent campaign comes to the attention of an ambitious Gestapo inspector named Escherich. A murderous cat-and-mouse game begins.

This is a unique book in that it is written shortly after the end of World War II by a German author. It is a book about living in Germany during World War II from a German perspective, a German that is not happy with the Nazi system. It is a difficult book to read in that it is about a difficult and painful time in which to live in Germany. Yet, the story is unique and tantalizing. The story itself is based on a true story and doesn't stray very far from actual events.
