Mennonite in a Little Black Dress: A Memoir of Going Home
5 journalers for this copy...
Purchased for the Easter exchange, I went to my local charity shop with my partner's wishlist in hand. I was very happy to find a copy of this book since I read and enjoyed another copy of it last summer. (http://www.bookcrossing.com/journal/8341178/)
Happy Easter and enjoy! Also, I've added in some treats for you to enjoy. Peeps and maple filled chocolate eggs since I live in VT, maple syrup central!

Welcome to bookcrossing! You have "caught" what we call a "travelling book." It is now your book to keep or to read and pass on to another reader and follow where the book goes. This is done by journal entries, so I really hope you'll journal it, if only to tell me you found it. You can do this anonymously, or sign up (free and private, no spam) and also be able to follow the book as it travels! If you do, please consider listing me, megami-no-ushi as your referring member.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
I enjoyed the book, even if the actual narrative parts about mennonites and the lifestyle was rather slim. There was almost no overarching plot, but a multitude of anecdotes about the authors past - while mennonite and while living in the secular world. Some were amusing, some contemplative.
I felt well entertained most of the time.
Good travels!

Read it last summer. Fortunately, I liked the author's humor and laughed out loud a lot, otherwise I would have been disappointed. For readers with interest in Mennonite life the book hardly offers information.
I rather felt there was nothing unusual about her stories: teenage angst? Embarrassing parents? Bad clothes? Don't we know it all?
The food isn't especially Mennonite either, but common Eastern European. I've been eating and cooking Borscht all my life (and wouldn't do it without beets!). I even know the filled cabbage leaves under a slightly different name and have been craving them ever since I read this book.

An enjoyable read, light and funny on the Mennonite way of life part, though I get a little bit bored with the broken marriage and unfaithful husband story. As I did not know a thing about Mennonites, not even that they exist, I found the appendix rather useful and enlightening.
