As a big Roth fan, gotta say not overly impressed with this one. Not nearly as bad as "American Pastoral" which I absolutely hated, but pretty bad. He's a terrific writer, his language is interesting and crisp, but there's just not an interesting story and the whole thing comes off as a rambling diatribe instead of a fictional novel. I know that Roth's books tend to be very unconventional, but this one just meandered from one boring monologue to the next, with Nathan Zuckerman's own past creeping in slightly between Murray and Ira Ringold telling their laborious tales, spewing a litany of political dogmas and social injustices of the past. Ugh. I'm hoping the 3rd in the "American" trilogy, "The Human Stain" is more enjoyable than this one. (Read 11/03)
