An underground classic, this book looks at the Hawaii plantation experience for Japanese-Americans in the 1930's.

Journal Entry 2 by kiwiinengland at Wellington City, Wellington Province New Zealand on Monday, May 6, 2013
A fascinating short read about a period of time and experiences I knew nothing about. A family of Japanese who live in Hawaii try and create a life eeking out an existence working on cane plantations. It is basically slave labour, with a well established hierarchy that puts them at virtuallying the bottom of the heap.

Focusing on two brothers who learn English at school and Japanese at home, the young men try and find their way living with cultural expectations to obey their parents while seeking to pay off a family dept.

Journal Entry 11 by winggreenbadgerwing at St Albans, Hertfordshire United Kingdom on Sunday, October 6, 2019
The story of a Japanese-American family in Hawaii in the run up to the war, living on a tiny income. I'm afraid I didn't really get into this - the story skips around a lot and I couldn't always work out what was going on.
