Apart from the occasional departures into magical realism, I found this story to be a heart-wrenching and enthralling tale of one girl's fight for self-discovery and her place in the world against a pretty unfeeling upbringing. Of course, I recognise (as with Slaughterhouse-five, an otherwise totally unrelated book) that departures into fantasy land serve a very important purpose for characters wishing to escape from everyday reality. A recommended read.

Thanks running-gal. This arrived safely with another book from the OZ 1001 VBB. I've enjoyed other books by this author before so am looking forward to read this.

Thanks running-gal for sharing this book with me. I really did enjoy it. It feels like the book is largely autobiographical, and if it is, it shows just how mad and warped in their thinking some sections of our society are. I've grown up in a fanatical religious environment myself, so recognised some aspects, but the author manages to make it all seem very surreal.
