I bought this at the Phoenix Association (animal rescue) Giant Book Sale fund-raiser today. This is for LaBarbe's TBR shelf.
What a depressing book! Hans is a young Swede living with his alcoholic father. Sad events and horrible jobs in his teens send him off to the depths of Africa. After 20 years of a scary, miserable existence there, at the end of the story we find him climbing on a plane to flee back to Sweden, and an unknown future in his middle age. Well written, but it seems to be more of a political rant about the battle between greedy, inscrutable white colonists and their poor black, employees trying to come to terms both in their own horrible ways with independence and change. *shudder*
