It has the potential for so much, however, this story falls short. Its basic storyline is about 5 sisters who ulitmately end up committing suicide. The book at different points begins to hit the depth of the storyline and than veers off into someplace that does not make sense. You really understand who is telling the story or why.

I agree with Hanrahan, "It has the potential for so much, however, this story falls short. The book at different points begins to hit the depth of the storyline and than veers off into someplace that does not make sense." Lot's of unanswered questions for me with this book. How did the house fall apart so fast???? I live in an old falling down farmhouse and never could I imagine it getting to that condition in such a short time span. Also, why were the girls so bent on the boy's being in the house that last night? Not to mention.. it would have been nice to have a clue as to what those 4 girls were thinking.. not to mention the Mom! Hello!

There's alot of notations and underlining in the book.. as if this were used in an English Lit class. Strange book. This book seems to be on alot of folk's wish list.. I'll offer it as a bookray. Will be reading his next book Middlesex next.. I hope that's a better read.
The Blue shows where the book is.

Looks like this one had a rough trip from New Jersey to Virginia -- it's a little banged up, but it got here in one piece. I have to admit, after reading the previous journalers' opinions, I'm kinda nervous about how much I'll enjoy this, but I'll give it a shot! Will journal again when finished.

I have to agree with this book's previous journalers -- I expected more. The story is told from the perspective of one of the neighborhood boys (readers aren't told exactly which one), a POV that doesn't offer much insight to the world of five suicidal suburban girls. The book left me with a lot of questions, and didn't really offer many answers. The biggest question I had, though, was this: Why were all these boys so obsessed with the Lisbon girls? Because where I come from, any child unforunate enough to be in the Lisbon girls' position was mocked and tortured, not secretly idolized.

I promised myself I wouldn't watch the movie until I'd seen the book. I hope the movie does a better job at presenting the lives of the Lisbon girls than Jeffrey Eugenides.

Ack! I am so embarrassed. I had no idea I had had this book for so long. My deepest apologies. I got no response from Mandana so this is in the mail to Arwen-Galadriel. Again, I am so sorry.

So I actually finished this book awhile ago, and I could have sworn that I made a journal entry for it, but it looks like for some reason it didn't get updated. But anyways. Although I did enjoy the book I did find it very one sided and in the end it does fall short (as Hanrahan-Siudy points out). I did find myself wondering at certain points in the book that it would have been interesting to get the girls version of the story, but ultimatley I don't think that would have been good for the story either. As when suicide does happen we don't know why it happens. I do think the story could have been so much more well developed, but alas you can't have everything. As soon as I get an address I will send the book along its way.

Update February 3, 2007 - no reply from the last two participants in the bookring so I will making the book available to whoever would like it.
