A real page-turner, albeit filled with much unpleasantness. This is the book to recommend to your friends who try to argue that shearing sheep for wool is not cruel, but rather only benefits them with great haircuts. George Ryan, Jr. made that argument to me and I tried to explain to him how ignorant he was, but he wouldn't listen and I don't think he ever wanted to know the truth. However, his obituary says he "loved all creatures great and small." Don't let that happen to you. In the novel, after the head honcho animal exploiter laughed at an animal activist's call for anti-cruelty legislation, he went up in flames in a firestorm which also caught other exploited animals; dogs and horses. After a meat eater disturbed an injured boar, he got trampled to death in retaliation. There are many many examples of ignorance and cruelty in this book, including biological warfare against non-native bunnies (ironic that humans created the problem in the first place, huh?)
