A Japanese lady Shoko married an American GI, and he took her back to USA. She was able to be with him, and she had also gotten a daughter later. In the middle of the book, the girl had gotten older than 30, and went to Japan to see others of her mother's friendly family. It's very interesting to see how they work for it.

On back of the book, it says:

When Shoko decided to marry an American GI and leave Japan, she had her parents' blessing, her brother's scorn, and a gift from her betrothed--a book titled "How to Be an American Housewife."
As she crossed the ocean to America, Shoko also carried a secret she wanted to keep her entire life...
P.S. It's January 2015, not 2014.
