Nothing Is Heavy

Brilliant sizzling plot with humour, compassion and excitement.
This is a debut novel by an accomplished writer, with a rave cover blurb by Janice Galloway, which says "Surprise yourself - read it" and another by Sophie Hannah "Totally unpredictable, hilarious in places, unforgettable.". I have read it and they are right. I hate giving my signed copy away but it deserves to be read.
picked up at meetup - thanks
Gosh, this was so much better than I expected! I'm now unsure what to do with it next (re-release at the next meetup, or try and get it a wider audience via a bookray?).
Set in Edinburgh, although there's not much recognisable to hang onto, it centres around 3 main characters: Amber (an exotic dancer), Beth (works in a chip shop) and George (on a stag night, dressed as a monkey). They all co-incide one night and a series of events spiral them together. As we read about the events of the night, we find out more about each individual, their backgrounds & how they all interelate even though they don't realise it.
I don't want to say too much about it, as you need to read it! I'll just say that I loved the characters and how they are drawn. I loved some of the incidental characters: shark boy, the Elvis style chip shop owner. I loved the way the author pulls all the strings together and how she made me care about what happens to everybody.
Well worth reading!

This arrives at a very busy time of year for me workwise - not to mention the busy-ness around the holidays. I'm currently reading another ring and some work-related books - I hope to be able to pick this up soon. Thanks so much for sending - hopefully it won't spend too much time up here in the Alps.

Coincidences and strange encounters - fate? I found the beginning of the book difficult, but enjoyed it more once Beth and Amber began their getaway. George comes off as a slightly pathetic figure, which is a bit of a shame. I ended up being quite captivated by this - glad of the bookcrossing ring which brought it to my attention. I have the next address and will try to get it in the mail soon.

Oops. Thanks, penelopewanders, for sending this on to me. It arrived before Christmas but, what with one thing and another, has only just surfaced in my memory. I've just read the first two chapters and, truth be told, was hooked on the first page. I do love a book that hooks with the first paragraph. :)

What a lovely, lovely book this is! I was captivated by the opening page - well, the opening paragraph, truth be told:
"The angel was wearing L-plates. Her wings were bent, her halo hung at an angle and she swayed on her feet like she was standing on the deck of a ship. From behind the counter of the Deep Sea, Beth watched and waited. If this is a messenger from God, she thought, then He is having a laugh."
The bulk of the story takes place in the course of one night in Edinburgh, although it draws heavily on the protagonists' past lives and the coincidences that bind them together. I didn't mind that these were a little far-fetched; it's a useful device to demonstrate the inter-connectedness of us all, and the book is none the worse for it.
I cannot recommend this highly enough. Passing it on now, with some regret.

The three protagonists are Beth, who works in a chippy, Amber, a stripper who does 'extras' and George, still mourning the loss of his ex and out on a stag night. They are brought together by chance on a crazy, drama-filled night, little knowing that their lives have been intertwined for years. An excellent read with surprising twists and a running theme of angels.

Amber, Beth and George are all in the same seedy area at around the same time on a Saturday night, in Edinburgh… their adventures continue on into the early hours of Sunday (and after, as a result of this one night)
In the beginning, no one of them actually knows the other two
Amber is a pole dancer in a ‘nightclub’; she has a dream for her future
Beth works in a Fish and Chip shop; she tries not to dream, ever
George works in a music shop; during the story he has a dream that determines his future, and that of a former girlfriend, who he has been grieving over
The story changes between characters as we get their back-story but at no time is the thread to the bigger picture lost
The three are linked by time and place… and by a further link… that of Death
Deaths in the past, death on the doorstep, a near death, and impending death
There is nothing morbid about the story; in fact it is hilarious in places, particularly regarding George, who is out and about in a monkey suit
I really, really enjoyed this book; I look forward to seeing the name Vicki Jarrett on the cover of other books in the future :)
*Thank You* again to Cassandra2020 for starting this ray, and *Thank You* to greenbadger for posting it to me :)

Arrived safely today. Thank you, PE Dant, for the cute Hello Kitty flannel which accompanied it, really made my day!
Looking forward to reading this one. Have a few ahead of it, but should be able to get to it shortly!

Mixed feelings on this one. Didn't love it or hate it.
Idea and characters are certainly more original than your average book. Really liked all three of them and would have rated this quite highly in the first part of the book. Then there does seem to be a bit of a slump where the story drags and I found I wasn't enjoying it quite so much, which lead to me taking a little longer to get through this than I would have liked. It does pick up again with Amber's revelation, and then again at the end when all the stories tie in together.
Overall I liked it, and I'm glad I had the chance to read this. I don't think it is one I would read again and I'm not sure I would seek out other stories by this author. Then again, if one came my way, I would give it a go, as I think she has potential (I am assuming this is her first book? I could be wrong on that).
The message at the end, to live left to the full was a good one, even though the means of doing it here are a bit shady!
I will pm the next reader and get this moving soon. Apologies for hanging onto it for a month!
