A Debut Fiction Choice from the Book People, The Snow Child is a unique and unforgettable novel that explores the complexities of parenting in an unforgettable way. As read by Miranda Richardson on Radio 4, the gentle story is interwoven with myth and fairy tale and has the power to sadden, delight and surprise you in equal measure. Jack and Mabel have staked everything on making a fresh start in the Alaskan wilderness, but as days grow shorter, life is still a struggle. When the first snow falls, the couple find themselves building a snowman - or rather a snow girl - in a moment of tenderness. The next morning, all trace of her has disappeared, but Jack can't quite shake the notion that he glimpsed a child in the dawn light...this is a delightful and enlightening read that will appeal to fans of The Time Traveler's Wife.

I didn't want this book to end because it was so magical - an adult fairy tale. The descriptive passages of the Alaska wilderness made me shiver at times and the harshness of life there was almost unbelievable. How on earth did people survive?
