"When a ferocious hurricane rips through Southern Florida, the con artists and carpetbaggers waste no time swarming over the disaster area.

Among the predators are Edie Marsh, an entrepreneurial young woman whose scheme to sleep with a Palm Beach Kennedy has fizzled, freeing her to concoct a colossal insurance rip-off; Lester Maddox Parsons, a murderous ex-con whose violent encounter with a game warden has left him with the fitting nickname of "Snapper"; and Avila, a crooked building inspector-turned-roofer, who dabbles somewhat unsuccessfully in the occult.

Caught in the middle are Max and Bonnie Lamb, newlyweds torn in wildly different directions by the storm. It is Max's fateful decision to abort their Disney World honeymoon and race to Dade County to see the terrible devastation. Armed with a video camera, the ambitious young advertising executive can't wait to show his hurricane tapes to his buddies back in New York. Over Bonnie's objections, Max eagerly sets out through the rubble, debris, and mayhem -- and promptly vanishes." from amazon.com

Carl Hiaasen books are finest satire, pointed to the modern american life, specifically to Florida, and how Disney et al are destroying Florida's beautiful nature. His characters are often wacky, if not lunatic :-) Great fun!

The actual copy has a different cover, one I like a lot better, although it looks a bit gruesome. I guess I am a fan of not necessary tasteful but interesting book covers.

That's exactly what I like about Bookcrossing : getting to know new authors, reading books I'd never bought (gruesome is the right word about the cover !) !
So this book was my surprise of the European Bookchain, which I received last friday...
I think you got the right idea, Lisa-B, looking at my bookshelf !
If this book combines mystery and fun, I can't wait to read it !

So many, many thanks !

Photo : except for the background, which is green instead of black, this is the cover on the book sent by Lisa-B...

Well, Lisa-B, I must send you many many thanks for allowing me to discover this author !
I've read myself to the end of this book with great pleasure !
So many things happen in the few days following the hurricane, people cross paths, not always for the best...
It's full of fun, cynism, irony, full of very strong and original characters (Skink and Augustine in particular)... I loved it, really...

And you're true about the cover : the one with the skulls is much more appropriate (a flamingo, really ! a lion (or a monkey) would have been better !)...

Thanks again !

it was a..... ummmm ..... a hiassen story! in his usual style, it was 6 or 7 stories are one time, starting from different places and directions and then finally meeting each other. the stories and the people in it, as usual were pretty unusual! or maybe not, well actually not, the people are not that unusual the main event, or what starts the story is an unusual event and then you see how ordinary people react. well ofcourse there is always a crook or two and the unwilling/going with the tide/quite ordinary/VERY unusual/quite likeable man and the strong woman, but i like them and so am quite willing to read another story about them. see what they do this time, and it's not disappointing, neither the story, nor the people in it and not the flow and the ease which they are all told and pulled together.
thanks boucli and now this is ready to go to beltempest

I finally finished it. Thanks, Katayoun.

It was a good book. Hiaasen is very skillful at bringing many plot threads together over the course of a book. He's also good at evoking a sense of what Florida is like. Its really too bad that the Florida he's writing about seems to be filled to the brim with the corrupt and quirky. Not really a ringing endorsement for tourism since the book made me not want to come within 500 miles of the state. But a fun read nonetheless.
