Was at Bücher-Brocky today and found four books from my wishlist! inter alia this one ^__^
When Erik Davidsen and his sister, Inga, find a disturbing note among their late father’s papers, they believe he may be implicated in a mysterious death. The Sorrows of an American tells the story of the Davidsen family as brother and sister unbandage its wounds in the year following their father’s funeral. Erik is a psychiatrist dangerously vulnerable to his patients; Inga is a writer whose late husband, a famous novelist, seems to have concealed a secret life. Interwoven with each new mystery in their lives are discoveries about their father’s youth–poverty, the War, the Depression–that bring new implications to his relationship with his children. (blurb)
"The Sorrows of an American feels like a very personal story and is all the more intimate for it. I suspect this is a sleight of hand on Hustvedt's part - she is a very private and guarded writer - but her skill lies in convincing the reader that we have seen right inside someone's soul." (The Guardian)
It's too long ago that I've read this, I cannot remember much of the content, except that it's kind of a mourning novel for the author's father who deceased in 2004. (Hustvedt even used original passages from her father's journal). However I can remember how I came to notice this novel. Hustvedt's husband wrote around the same time also a novel about the deceased father-in-law: Travels in the Scriptorium. I was curious to read the story from her point of view.
